ESSAY 34
ENVIRONMENTALISM
God was the first environmentalist. He wanted his
earth cared for, so he commissioned Adam and Eve to watch
over it.
Billy Graham, in the KANSAS CITY STAR (March 4, 1993)
offers this perceptive counsel:
God gave us natural resources for our use and
he gave us the ability to use them wisely to make
our lives better. In a sense they are not even
ours; God owns them, and we are but trustees of the
Earth and its resources. "'The silver is mine and
the gold is mine,' declares the Lord Almighty"
(Haggai 2:8). But this is a serious responsibility,
because "The highest heavens belong to the Lord,
but the Earth he has given to man." (Psalm 115:16).
Dr. Graham also urges us to not misuse resources and to be a
good steward of the Earth so that others and our children
will not be harmed.
Our stewardship includes both the animate the inanimate
parts of our environment.
King Solomon of ancient Israel writes of caring for
animals,
A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal,
but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel."
(Proverb 12:10, NIV).
As a Christian, one should attempt to save a species
from becoming extinct. However, if one is committed to a
strict interpretation of the theory of evolution, should one
attempt to interfere with the "survival of the fittest"
doctrine?
Moses wrote concerning care of the vegetable kingdom,
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden
of Eden to work it and take care of it." (Genesis
2:15, NIV).
After God created Adam and Eve, he
. . .blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful
and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue
it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of
the air and over every living creature that moves
on the ground.'" (Genesis 1:28, NIV).
The earth is not yet full of people (See Essay 58). We have
quite a way to go in our stewardship of the animal kingdom.
It is interesting to note that the most dangerous envi-
ronment today for a human being is in his mother's womb--
especially if the child is a female. Another dangerous envi-
ronment is an American hospital if you are an unwanted new-
born or a seriously ill person of any age.
The most life-threatening electromagnetic force is emit-
ted from the radio and television towers that carry "politi-
cally correct" programming into our homes!
The most dangerous air pollution comes from the mouths
of the "educational elite."
